Bio- and forest industry company UPM is starting a major project aimed at demonstrating processes for the production of green chemical products using forest raw materials. SEKAB, the Swedish chemicals company, is participating contributing its technology to convert forest product residues into sugars and lignin. The EU is investing EUR 13 million in the project.

Locally grown plastics is a newly established, unique partnership that includes the entire manufacturing chain for bio- based plastics – from the forest industry to packaging producers. SEKAB E-Technology welcomes SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden’s (SP) engagement in the Biorefinery Demo Plant in Örnsköldsvik, previously known as the Ethanol Pilot. SEKAB is one out of four companies to receive a sustainability decision for biofuels and bioliquids from the Swedish Energy Agency. The sustainability decision is the first ever to be granted in Sweden, which proves that SEKAB’s fuel is guaranteed durable, a prerequisite for obtaining tax exemption for renewable fuels as of February 1, 2012.

SEKAB announced today that the company will end the operation and collaboration agreement for maintenance and operation of the Ethanol Pilot, owned by EPAB (Ethanol Pilot of Sweden AB). SEKAB E-Technology and Taurus Energy have successfully carried out a three-week long industrial demo scale evaluation of Taurus Energy's yeast. The yeast has been specially developed, and, in contrast to ordinary yeast, it can ferment pentose as well as hexose.
