SEKAB, the Swedish chemicals company, is participating contributing its technology to convert forest product residues into sugars and lignin. The EU is investing EUR 13 million in the project.

The yeast has been specially developed, and, in contrast to ordinary yeast, it can ferment pentose as well as hexose. It is a crucial step on the way towards commercialising a process for producing ethanol from cellulose-based raw materials.
